LGBTQ+ Affirmative Mental Health Care

CATS is committed to providing LGBTQ+ Affirmative Mental Health Care

What is LGBTQ+ affirmative mental health care?

LGBTQ+ affirmative mental health care recognizes and respects the diverse identities and experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) individuals. LGBTQ+ affirmative mental health care is based on the premise that LGBTQ+ identities are not pathological or abnormal, but rather natural and valid expressions of human diversity. LGBTQ+ affirmative mental health care aims to create a safe and supportive environment for LGBTQ+ clients, where they can explore their feelings, thoughts, and behaviors without fear of judgment, rejection, or discrimination. LGBTQ+ affirmative mental health care also addresses the specific challenges and stressors that LGBTQ+ individuals may face, such as stigma, prejudice, violence, harassment, family rejection, internalized homophobia or transphobia, identity confusion, isolation, and lack of social support. LGBTQ+ affirmative mental health care helps LGBTQ+ clients to cope with these difficulties, and to develop a positive sense of self, resilience, and well-being.

Why is LGBTQ+ affirmative mental health care important for children and teens?

Children and teens are in a crucial stage of development, where they are forming their sense of identity, self-esteem, and belonging. LGBTQ+ children and teens may face additional challenges in this process, as they may encounter negative messages or reactions from their peers, family, school, community, or media regarding their sexual or gender identity.

LGBTQ+ children and teens may also struggle with internal conflicts or confusion about their identity, and may experience anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, self-harm, substance abuse, or suicidal thoughts or behaviors as a result. LGBTQ+ affirmative mental health care can provide a vital source of support and guidance for LGBTQ+ children and teens, helping them to understand and accept themselves, and to navigate the social and emotional challenges they may face.

LGBTQ+ affirmative mental health care can also foster a positive relationship between LGBTQ+ children and teens and their parents or caregivers, who may need assistance in understanding and supporting their LGBTQ+ child or teen. LGBTQ+ affirmative mental health care can ultimately enhance the mental health and well-being of LGBTQ+ children and teens, and promote their healthy development and growth.
