How do you evaluate for learning disabilities?

A learning disability evaluation involves a comprehensive assessment of a child’s cognitive abilities and academic development. Whenever a child comes to us for a learning disability evaluation, we also examine whether ADHD might be a contributor to a child’s learning challenges. Learning disabilities and ADHD commonly co-occur.

What are the different types of learning disabilities?

Learning disabilities tend to fall into the general categories of reading, writing, and math. While some children present with a single learning disability, others have learning disabilities across multiple areas.

A reading disability (or dyslexia) involves unexpected difficulties in reading development. Reading disabilities may involve challenges with reading comprehension, decoding, and/ or fluency.

A learning disability in math can manifest as problems with number sense, math calculation, math reasoning, and/ or math fact fluency. In some cases, a child’s dyslexia can impact math learning.

For writing, some children present with challenges with handwriting, pencil grip, writing mechanics, and/ or organizing their thoughts onto paper.
